“We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost”(Articles of Faith 1:1). This is a remarkably clear doctrine considering the confusion that has existed in the world for centuries as to the nature of God. While other churches and denominations squabbled and debated in their confusion about the nature of God, God himself, through His prophet Joseph Smith, revealed this simple yet profound truth. God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are separate and distinct beings each with their individual functions and roles to fill. Despite their being separate beings the scriptures often speak about one god. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost are one in their purpose and mission which is to help us to fulfill the commandment “be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matt 5: 48).
God the Father, our Heavenly Father, is the father of our spirits. He loves every human being that has lived or ever will live on this earth because He is their father. Because he loves us and desires that we return to live with him again after this life, he gives us instructions and commandments. Further, He knows that in this life there is only one way to be happy—through following certain eternal laws and principles. He gives us commandments to teach us these principles and as a way for us to show our love for Him as our Father. I personally know that God love me. I have felt his love in my life many times and I have seen the evidence of that love in blessings that have come into my life that I know could not have come through any other way.
